Travel Myth: Travel Advisors Only Book Resorts + Hotels

Since the pandemic started making headlines in early 2020, many travelers have shifted their focus from international to domestic vacations.  There’s really so much to see here within the continental US!  Despite strict cleanliness, masking, and social distancing protocols, many domestic travelers felt more comfortable in short term rentals (Airbnb, VRBO, etc.). My husband and I owned and operated two short-term rentals during this time and we were consistently booked up!  Often, people just wanted to change up their location while working and attending school remotely, so they chose a change of scenery with all the amenities of home.

There’s no denying that the domestic travel market is still popular, and a lot of these trips involve family and close friends.  Often in groups, road trips are the way to go, especially among families where purchasing multiple air tickets can be more expensive than traveling by car.  With more people involved in the trip, it’s often most economical, and a lot more fun, for groups to stay in a condo or home rather than multiple disconnected hotel rooms without all the amenities that a short-term rental can offer.

Although the vaccine is gaining traction and many borders are starting to open up to travelers, a lot of people are still gravitating toward domestic trips utilizing short-term rentals.  According to this article from Nasdaq, Airbnb’s gross booking value for the quarter ending June 30th of this year was $13.4 billion! That’s 320% higher than the same quarter in 2020 and 37% higher than the same quarter in 2019.  People seem to really prefer the added amenities and home-like experience that’s driving a short-term rental boom.

So, what does this have to do with me as a travel advisor?  Initially, it would look like I’m undermining my profession here.  But that’s not the case at all.  First, there’s plenty of room in the travel market for traditional accommodations like hotels and resorts, as well as short-term rentals.  Second, different types of travelers have different needs and I think the variety of options available is the best way to accommodate all of those needs. Finally, as a travel advisor with a network of resources, I have access to book short-term rentals too!

However, when most travelers think of when and why to utilize a travel agent, they think primarily of things like international travel, all-inclusive resorts, and cruises.  But there’s so much more I can help with!  Looking to visit Disney with your family or with some friends and their kids?  I have access to resources that have specialized rental homes within 10 minutes of a Disney entrance with shuttle service.  Some even have private pools, access to a golf course, and specially themed rooms for the kids!  Want a condo on the beach in San Diego? I have resources for that too! Planning a road trip to the Florida Keys?  I can find you some amazing short-term rentals along the way, and somewhere to stay in the Keys!  Whether flying or driving to your destination, whatever you’re looking for, make sure to give me a call – I can help you find the perfect rental for your next trip!
