Not ready to leave the US? Here’s some winter getaway inspiration! Part 2
Last week, I shared some winter escape inspiration focused on the Continental United States. If you missed it, you can find that information here. This week, I’ll round out the list with often overlooked options outside the Continental US that are still US territories. Entry requirements vary, but tend to be less formal than going international. I love experiencing all four seasons, but winter can be long and even I end up craving a break. A taste of island life with its sandy beaches, sunshine, and tropical drinks always tops the destination list that time of year. Check out some great options below!
Getaways outside the Continental United States
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a truly hidden gem! So many people forget that it’s a US territory. Hiking the El Yunque rainforest, snorkeling, and diving are among the top attractions. Make sure to take a night trip to check out the bioluminescence! We got to see this natural phenomenon while crossing the Atlantic Ocean and it was amazing! History and culture abound in downtown San Juan with its colorful buildings and colonial architecture. And make sure to explore the arts, music, and downtown nightlife!

United States Virgin Islands
While on our sailing adventure, we spent about six months living on our catamaran sailing around the US and British Virgin Islands, so I have lots of experience with this area! The three main islands, St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix, all have their own airports, and you can go between the islands by ferry. Each islands offers its own attractions and amenities and has a different vibe, but they are all great destinations with wonderful beaches and historical and cultural attractions for all ages. I can help you find the hotspots and some off-the-beaten path adventures in the islands!

Guam
Located in Micronesia in the Western Pacific Ocean, it’s not your usual vacation destination. It became an important military base during World War II and has a tragic yet beautifully rich history. With an international airport, tourism has boomed and continues to be its primary economic driver. History buffs will enjoy the Pacific War Museum; and the pristine white sand will attract any beach-lover. Underwater world with exhibits on Marianas Trench, and interactive underwater activities will be a hit for children and adults alike!

*These last two destinations are a little more challenging to get to, but boy do they have a lot to offer the adventurous traveler willing to go the distance!
American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands
American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands are also located in the Western Pacific and are American Territories. They are a bit more remote and costly to get to, but would make a fascinating adventure for anyone looking to visit a lesser-known, but no less fascinating destination.
American Samoa
American Samoa is located about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand and is primarily made up of volcanic mountains and rainforest. The National Marine Sanctuary in Fagatele Bay has education exhibits, diving, fishing, and more! Check out the Fagatogo Market for fresh fish, produce, and Samoan handicrafts. There’s also a World War II Heritage Trail for history lovers.

Northern Mariana Islands
Located north of Guam, the Marianas are composed of 14 islands. The capital, Saipan, is the largest island, is popular for hiking, diving, and its beautiful beaches. Another World War II hub, it has many well preserved landmarks including the American Memorial Park. There are also many local cultural experiences available to visitors.
